“Choosing Health Over Harm”: SwPUC Partners with WHO for World No Tobacco Day

Combating nicotine addiction requires more than just spreading awareness; it calls for intentional, community-driven action. On May 31, 2026, in observance of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) World No Tobacco Day, a powerful health advocacy movement surged across the region, promoting a tobacco-free lifestyle. Taking the lead in this global initiative, the Southwestern Philippine Union Conference (SwPUC) rallied thousands of church members, health advocates, and community leaders to empower individuals to choose healing over harm.

The regional celebration featured vibrant, engaging health activities. In Zamboanga City, the event drew enthusiastic participation at the Paseo, where Pastor Cabil joined 342 runners for an energetic warm-up and a shared dedication to fitness. Expressing his delight at the positive reports from the field, Pastor Cabil highlighted the widespread success of the initiatives—a sentiment echoed in the Central Mindanao Mission (CMM), where a massive fun run attracted 420 eager participants.

Meanwhile, in Pagadian City, health advocates and church leaders organized a prominent motorcade, cruising through the city with banners urging residents to say "NO to tobacco and YES to healthy living." This eye-catching display effectively raised awareness and encouraged the community to make healthier choices.

The Pagadian City event beautifully illustrated this collaborative spirit, supported financially by the MPAC Board and organized by the MPAC Youth, led by Adrian Gornes. The initiative was further elevated by inspirational messages on holistic well-being from SwPUC Ministerial Director Pastor Arlben Nagal Nahasaneb and his wife, Ma’am Girlie Ando-Benasahan, alongside essential support from Pastors Jerrymil B. Pamonag and Gerry Vicente.

Further, the Metro Pagadian Adventist Church (MPAC) pioneered the "An Apple for a Cigarette" campaign. This straightforward yet impactful initiative symbolized the choice of health over harmful habits and inspired many to take a significant step towards a smoke-free future. Similarly, in Sindangan, the campaign adapted to offer practical support through a "From Cigarettes to Oranges and Bugas (Rice)" exchange.

In Cagayan de Oro, the advocacy took to both the streets and the pulpit. Mrs. Marife Patalinghug spoke at the CDO Central Church, promoting the exchange of tobacco for apples and water. Her outreach extended directly into the lively Bulua Market, where volunteers distributed health tracts, drawing the attention of active smokers and successfully inviting them to join a comprehensive medical mission later that day.

By fusing physical activity, innovative outreach, and a profound commitment to faith, SwPUC reaffirmed its dedication to saving lives, guiding individuals towards healthier habits, and fostering smoke-free communities.
