"Even in Life or Death": Southwestern Philippine Union Conference Midyear Meetings Conclude with a Call to Commitment
The three-day Midyear Meetings of the Southwestern Philippine Union Conference (SwPUC) concluded with a resolute reaffirmation of its "Mission First" mandate, effectively integrating strategic planning with profound spiritual reflection.
Moreover, Pastor Jim Adil commenced the final day by challenging leaders to consider "The Dynamics of Awareness and Growth in Evangelistic Efforts." Drawing upon Acts 5:14-15, which describes individuals seeking the healing shadow of Peter, Pastor Adil presented a pivotal inquiry: "What shadow do I cast? Is it therapeutic or toxic?"
To underscore the urgency of evangelism, he recounted the heroic narrative of John Harper, a minister who swam from one person to another in the frigid waters of the sinking Titanic, asking, "Is your soul saved?" Pastor Adil urged the assembly to take immediate action to reach at least one individual, cautioning against the lamentable consequences of missed opportunities, when the unconverted might one day ask, "Why did you not inform us?"
Subsequent to these spiritual reflections, the executive body engaged in official business. Several motions and strategic agendas were comprehensively reviewed and unanimously ratified to ensure the ongoing advancement and structural support of God’s work throughout the entire SwPUC territory.
Further, a significant highlight of these sessions was the endorsement of OneVoice27, a historic global evangelistic initiative initiated by the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Set for September 2027 to commemorate the 2,000th anniversary of Jesus' baptism, the campaign aims to mobilize millions of members globally to convey a unified message of hope through digital platforms and local outreach. To lead this initiative, the SwPUC administration and directors will conduct extensive training sessions across the union territory, empowering church members to operate "in one voice" under the guiding principle of Mission First.
The summit concluded with a solemn Commitment Service officiated by SwPUC Executive Secretary Pastor Max Dante Obbus. Drawing insightful leadership lessons from the biblical account of Ittai the Gittite, Pastor Obbus emphasized how Ittai, despite being a foreigner, exhibited remarkable loyalty to King David, often at great personal risk.
Resonating with Ittai's historic vow, Pastor Obbus implored contemporary leaders to affirm, "Even in life or death, I will be by your side, Lord!" He reminded the assembly that Ittai's unwavering commitment facilitated his participation in the ultimate victory.
With renewed spirits and strategic plans set into motion, the SwPUC Midyear Meetings officially adjourned, empowering administrators and lay leaders to return to their respective fields with a singular, unified declaration: Mission First!
