A Heart of Service: Celebrating Dr. Shirley M. Bacus' Journey of Dedication and Faith

On August 13, 2025, the Worship Hall at the Southwestern Philippine Union Conference Compound was filled with joy, laughter, and heartfelt tributes as friends, colleagues, and former coworkers gathered for a vibrant celebration to honor the retirement and birthday of Dr. Shirley M. Bacus. This surprise event, meticulously organized by the dedicated lady workers of the SwPUC, reflected the profound admiration and respect garnered by a woman whose remarkable 43-year journey in ministry has been characterized by unwavering commitment and a transformative impact on countless lives.
Pastor Wendel Serrano, the former President of the Southwestern Philippine Union Conference, delivered a compelling address that engaged the audience profoundly. He underscored the significant contributions of Dr. Bacus, including her role as a minister's spouse, her leadership in women's ministries, and her expertise as a health professional. He commended her outstanding capabilities as a lecturer and her proficiency in establishing meaningful connections with the audience. The latter portion of his presentation encompassed practical wisdom gleaned from social media posts relevant to retirees, emphasizing key insights that individuals in this stage of life should consider.
The celebration included a heartfelt video that showed well-wishes from many people whose lives Dr. Bacus has touched during her career. Friends and former colleagues from the Northern Central Mindanao Conference, Zamboanga Peninsula Mission, and Adventist Medical Center Iligan attended the event. Each shared stories that highlighted her dedication and compassion.
Dr. Bacus started her career in healthcare as a nursing staff member at Gingoog Sanitarium & Hospital in 1983. She has taken on many important roles over the years, including Emergency Room Coordinator, Director of Nursing Service, and Family Ministries Director. Her work at Mindanao Sanitarium & Hospital and with the Northern Mindanao Conference shows her strong commitment to both healthcare and spiritual service.
Dr. Bacus reflected on her long career and shared important insights about her journey. As the youngest of four siblings and the only daughter, she chose to focus on her family. Instead of looking for work abroad, she took local opportunities, which aligned with her parents' wishes. Her decision was deeply influenced by her father's fight against cancer. She wanted to be there for him when he needed her most. She asked herself, "What made me stay in the ministry with pride?" and answered with her strong belief: "There is joy in serving Jesus. I have no regrets working in the Philippines, serving my parents, and following my heart."
Dr. Bacus shared important lessons for those who want to follow her path. She said, “You cannot please everyone, and not everyone will accept you. It’s essential to keep moving forward.” She emphasized that making God her partner in her work brought her true happiness, fulfillment, and security. She believed, “I found that prayer is power; more prayer, more power.” This highlights the importance of her service and the spiritual strength that helped her through challenges.
As Dr. Shirley M. Bacus steps into retirement, her legacy stands as an inspiring testament to the profound impact of a life dedicated to service, guided by unwavering faith and anchored in love. Her journey will continue to inspire many who aspire to make a meaningful difference in their communities and the world. This celebration not only honored her remarkable career but also served as a poignant reminder to everyone present of the enduring power of a life dedicated to serving others.
