Mental Health and Technology in Education: Insights from the Joint Teachers’ Orientation at SwPUC
The Southwestern Philippine Union Conference (SwPUC) hosted a Joint Teachers’ Orientation on April 28, 2026, providing a platform for educators to engage in critical discussions about student well-being and the role of technology in education. The event featured two notable sessions: “Mental Health Matters,” led by Dr. Christopher S. Del Monte, and “Courageous Conversations: Balanced Tech Use in School,” presented by Dr. Alevir Pido.
During the “Mental Health Matters” session, Dr. Del Monte emphasized the significance of understanding the complexities of bullying in schools. He distinguished between ordinary conflict, which involves mutual disagreement, and bullying, which is characterized by intentional harm, power imbalances, and repeated mistreatment. He outlined various forms of bullying that educators should recognize, including physical, verbal, relational, cyber, disability-based, gender-related, faith-based, and teacher-enabled bullying.
Dr. Del Monte highlighted that bullying behavior stems from multiple risk factors, such as personal behavior, family dynamics, school climate, and peer influence. He stressed the importance of teacher well-being and empathy, urging educators to acknowledge their own limitations to better connect with both bullies and those targeted. He poignantly stated, “As a Christian institution, it is important for teachers to reflect the values of grace, care, and Christlike compassion in how they guide their students."
In the afternoon session, Dr. Alevir Pido led a discussion focusing on the responsible integration of technology into Adventist education. She posed the essential question, “How can we transform Adventist education?” by emphasizing the need for educators to remain mission-centered while adapting to the demands of the digital age. Dr. Pido advocated for a shift in approach – from outright banning devices to intentionally guiding students in responsible technology use, anchored in the Biblical message from 1 Corinthians 6:19–20, which underscores self-discipline and accountability.
Addressing concerns over excessive smartphone usage, Dr. Pido discussed its potential negative impacts on attention, academic performance, and social development. She urged educators to adopt restorative and educational methods that foster responsible digital habits rather than relying solely on punitive measures. Dr. Pido recommended that technology policies focus on helping students understand the purpose of responsible use and on promoting discipline formation over punishment.
The Joint Teachers’ Orientation of the North-Central Mindanao Conference, Central Mindanao Mission, and Northeastern Mindanao Mission served as an enriching experience for educators, reinforcing the idea that creating a supportive learning environment requires awareness, compassion, and intentional care. Both sessions provided valuable insights, equipping teachers with the knowledge and tools necessary to address bullying and effectively navigate technology in the classroom, all while fostering the core values of Adventist education.
